Bornholm, Denmark

This is our 10th port day in a row so we are just walking around and seeing what we can see. We arrived early into Bornholm, a Danish city and we are still in the Baltic Sea. We were happy to see the cities unique charm and small town history. This small island is home to approximately 39,000 inhabitants. Danish is the predominate nationality but some Swedish and Norway folks have migrated over.

Known for its rugged coastline, sandy beaches, and charming fishing villages, Bornholm has a distinct character. Its history is influenced by Vikings, Danes, and Swedes. Strategically located at the crossroads of trade routes, Bornholm has been a coveted prize for centuries. Its position in the Baltic Sea made it a vital outpost for controlling maritime traffic and trade. This strategic importance is evident in the imposing ruins of Hammershus, once Northern Europe’s largest medieval fortress. Despite its location and threatening defenses, Hammershus ultimately succumbed to Swedish forces in 1643.

Our short visit focused on exploring the heart of the island. We wandered through the town, admiring the traditional wooden houses with their vibrant red roofs. The atmosphere was perfect, walking and admiring the scenery and shops.

A highlight was discovering St. Nicolas Church, a historical church that has stood the test of time. Its tall white structure stood high on a hill.

While shopping we remembered we needed to purchase an additional suitcase. Not thinking we would find one in one of these small towns in the Nordic region, we were delighted to find a travel shop that had plenty. Our 9 month souvenir shopping spree resulted in a need for extra luggage since 6+ suitcases aren’t enough. We are under 30 days and will

soon need to start that daunting task of packing up our 9 month “home” and taking it back to our real home. Not looking forward to getting everything back into those suitcases!

Hope it’s big enough!

Our time here was a nice stroll and a bonus buy! Denmark is a pretty country.

Next on our list is Copenhagen Denmark.

May God Bless You Always!
