Traveling again? Somewhat…..

Rainbow beach and crystal clear water

Wow..it’s hard to believe its been almost 4 months since my last post. This Covid-19 virus is here to stay, for a while at least. Not much has happened in regards to world traveling other than, its just not happening! I thought we would be traveling again in a couple of months so I set aside the blog to do other things. Sadly, since March 18th when we arrived back in the USA, we have watched the world close down country by country and cruise lines have come to a complete halt. Each week they have extended the shutdown so far ahead that we are out to the end of September now before any cruises will take place. I seriously doubt they will begin in October. Since the United States is the worse in COVID-19 infections and deaths at 4.2 million positive cases and 148,000 deaths as of today, July 26, 2020, it will be difficult to travel until other countries open up and/or allow US Citizens to visit since we have the most documented cases. I’m sure this is a record the USA isn’t exactly wanting to be at number 1. The world cases are at 16.1 million positive cases and 645,000 deaths. It’s a sad and scary situation the world is in but we will recover. As slow as it is, there is a light shining at the end of the tunnel. It’s just a very narrow light that’s taking a lot of patience to get to. We are safe and healthy and plan to stay that way by doing our part in social distancing and wearing masks.

Our beautiful granddaughter Hailey

We spent time from March – May in Texas. We had such a wonderful time visiting and reconnecting with family after we finished our 14 days of quarantine when we arrived from Australia. We spent about a month in Florida getting all our yearly doctor appointments by video since the doctors were slowing opening up. We are now in St. Croix for two months and scheduled to return to Florida on September 1.  The cruise lines have been very forgiving in their policies to keep their wanting customers happy. We have had to cancel 4 cruises so far and hopefully thats it.
Mom and daughter – such a great relationship

All the news stations have been flooded with covid-19 news. Every day we had to listen as the death toll rose around the world as well as the millions of people being infected. We finally decided enough and turned the TV and social media OFF! That lasted for awhile but it appears we are back listening but with less shock. It’s sad to believe that we are becoming numb to the daily news of sickness and deaths.  My faith in God knows we will get there again someday.
One of the untouched beaches near Frederiksted, St. Croix. We hiked a couple of miles here.

On a more positive note, our daughter Sandra and granddaughter Hailey came to visit us in St. Croix. There’s just not much to do here but we did find a couple of beaches to take them to and we were able to go out to eat one night, with masks on. They enjoyed the sun and sand and we enjoyed our time spent with them.

This island has very few cases and the government here wants to keep it that way. Just like the other parts of the world, they too are seeing a spike in infections. Its very HOT here in St. Croix and the island is on a semi lockdown so not many stores are open and beaches are not being cleaned because limited tourists are around. We’ll bide our time here until we return to Florida in September. We are not complaining as we could be stuck in a not so favorable location. Right now we are unsure what will transpire once we arrive back in Florida. Until then, stay safe and may God always bless you all!

  1. You may not remember us, but we were with you on your first cruise out of Galveston to Barcelona. We really admired your adventuresome spirit, and talked about doing some of what you two are doing, but on a smaller scale. We just cancelled a November cruise from Tarragona, Spain to Tampa, Florida, but anticipate going on another cruise from Galveston in April 2021 that will end up in Copenhagen, Denmark. We still have our oldest son and his wife in London, and will get them back to the Houston area once travel restrictions/quarantine eases and his wife’s green card comes through. She is a Brazilian citizen. We’re glad you landed in as pretty a place as St. Croix to wait things out! Blessings on your future adventures! Michael and Catherine Smith
