Counting the days. Dinner in Trouville

Bridge that connects Deauville to Trouville, France

We went for a nice french dinner to wrap up our stay here in Deauville. Its the first time I’ve had broiled shrimp with the heads on. It was different. It was an experience And its the first time we spent 9 euros/$10 on two bottles of water! But, the ice cream dessert was out of this world! We walked around the marina from Trouville to Deauville expecting to take the short cut between marinas which is a small walkway with a gate when the water “locks” are closed. The locks keep water in/out to match when the tide is in/out. We have never seen such a tidal location. The fishing and boating here is 100% dependent on the the tidal conditions. When we bought our boat in 2002, we took a course and learned quite a bit about boating and I remember learning about the tides and how the moon and weather affects how high or low the water is at certain times of the day. We are amazed sometimes when we go out that the beach has been extended for what looks like miles and boats are run aground for cutting it too close.

This unfortunate group of sailers failed to get their boat in before the tide was too low and ran aground. This is the same area as in the last picture on this post. You’ll see the difference in the water level. There were here for hours until the tide came back in.

Many of the fishermen we watch daily, leave around 9-10 pm and come back in the mornings when we are having our coffee.  Last night walking to dinner we were able to cross this bridge over the lock because the water was so low around 7 pm that they had it closed to keep boats safely tucked inside the marina with as much water as possible. 2 hours later, leaving dinner, the water was up at least 2-3 feet which made it look more beautiful as the sun was setting but they opened the gate! So, we had to walk around the long way and although a very nice night for a walk (in the daylight at 10 pm) we missed the sunset and it was a beauty from where we were standing. Many condos and homes face the water so we weren’t able to see the full setting on the water but the sky was really pretty.

Many flower window boxes line the streets

We leave tomorrow morning to head to St. Malo to catch the ferry, so today we will finalize our packing. Everything is packed except some necessities we use daily. They are all stacked neatly on a coffee table ready to be packed. We wont need to worry about weight distribution since we aren’t flying. We will however need to take all 4 pieces of luggage, my roller carry on bag, Chucks laptop and backpack all on the ferry ourselves. This should be interesting. We could have reserved our seating but it was upstairs so we had to settle for something downstairs. I inquired from the ferry company about the amount of luggage we had and they said we were OK but they had no place to store them. We would need to keep them with us at all times. Its only about an hour and 1/2 trip so if we have to stand it wont be too bad. We’ll figure it out.

We’ll wander around today to soak in all that we can before we leave. The beach is close so it’ll be a beautiful walk this evening.

The Casino lights are on and the tide is rising.

May God bless you all!
