San Juan, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, USVI and the dentist

The last couple of days were spent in two beautiful islands, San Juan, Puerto Rico and St Thomas, VI. Its absolutely beautiful here. 80+ degrees each day and a little rain and cloud cover in St. Thomas but that didn’t make it any less beautiful.

In San Juan, we were in search of a dentist to replace a crown I lost. The first of our many woes with unknown dental and/or medical care. The dentist in San Juan was no longer there so we enjoyed the rest of the day and the sights around San Juan.

View of San Juan Harbour from Bastian de las Palmas Park.

We visited the Bastian de las Palmas park, mainly because where we were traveling was up a steep hill and we need a break! It had a beautiful view of the harbour.

Chapel of Christ the Savior (english version). Legend traces its origins to a miraculous happening at the site.

We then wandered around over to the  Capital del Santo Cristo de la Salud, also know as the chapel of Christ the savior. It was built in 1753-1780 on top of San Juan’s city walls.

Raices Fountain designed to commemorate the New worlds 500th Anniversary. The status honor Puerto Ricos mixed heritages represented as a ship being steered out into the open sea by dolphins, leading the way to a brighter 21st century.

We had heard about the beautiful fountain so we knew we would have to stop and take some photos.

Beautiful colorful umbrellas lined this street. Made a nice photo op!

Walking to the fountain you would need to walk on a walkway among many tree lined sidewalks.

Tree lined street on the way to the fountain.

Some of these trees were huge and covered several restaurants. We were told these restaurants had the best Mojito’s.

Chuck liked this little john boat. Told him to hop in, he might get back to Florida in a week or two! 🙂

The cute patios outside restaurants were really pretty.

We settled for water. We needed a different type of hydration with these long walks. The fountain is called the Raices fountain. It was beautiful to sit and just watch.

For my Harley friends and family, here’s your t-shirt!

In St. Thomas we found the first dentist we could find and called. Her office was also closed. I guess we need to find out what island time is.

Beautiful St. Thomas, VI

However, Giggy was so nice that she said she would fix my crown and give us directions. The unbelievable part of this journey to the dentist was the taxi drivers didn’t know how to get there even though I gave them an address. 5 taxi drivers later we were able to find a young lady smart enough to call the dentist and get directions. So, $125 later, I have my crown back on. At least until it comes off again.

We decided to walk back to the ship instead of taking a taxi. We had no issues finding our way back but it was 3 miles. Chuck casually mentioned that I needed to get accustomed to walking since we wont have a car everywhere we go. Jury’s still out on that. I really need to get into shape to do that!

Driving on the left side of the street. A little scary.

Other than enjoying the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Thomas, we walked by the cemetery where all the graves are above ground in stackable vault type cement boxes.

Caskets/vaults above ground

Popular place.

We remember from past visits to tropical islands that because they are a certain feet above sea level, they cant bury their dead in the ground.

We were laughing and not all shocked that most cars had front end damage but to see the police car beat up too?

They drive on the left side of the road here which was fun to watch. Chuck and I both commented that they drive almost as bad as the people in Jamaica. Those drivers over there are crazy! No traffic lights, they just go anywhere they want.  It wasn’t as bad here but was pretty close.

Cute cobblestone streets lined with shops and eateries.

We are off to the Atlantic Ocean for the next 7 days until we stop in Spain. Looking forward to the relaxing and reading.

I’m not sure why I was surprised but there were a few Vegan Restaurants.

Oh, and we booked 2 more cruises. A 25 night cruise across the Bering Sea in Sept 2020, leaving Vancouver Canada, traveling through many ports in Japan and stopping in Singapore.

Another T-Shirt for the Harleys!

The other cruise is a 19 day Hawaii cruise, leaving Australia traveling through New Zealand, the Tahitian islands, Bora Bora and ending up in Hawaii in 2021. This is the one I am excited about. We will cross the international dateline twice. Once across the Bering Sea and the other across the Pacific.

As the evening sets in, we leave you with this last photo of St. Thomas.

Be well and may God bless you all!

Chuck & Lea Ann
