Iceland Volcano

View from the cruise ship

Just one hour after leaving the serene Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik, Iceland, our world cruise group was treated to an unexpected and awe-inspiring spectacle: a volcanic eruption. It was a surreal experience, especially considering the warnings our guide had given us earlier.

Our guide had cautioned us that a volcanic eruption was imminent, possibly within an hour, a week, or even months. He had outlined the potential risks and advised us on what to do if an eruption occurred, which was to exit the beautiful waters of the Blue Lagoon, don’t shower, change your clothes quickly and then make your way to the bus. Little did we know, his prediction would come true so swiftly.

2024 has been a year of volcanic activity in Iceland. This particular eruption follows several others that have captivated the world. They have had 6 eruptions since we left Miami in December!

Scientists use various methods to predict volcanic eruptions, including monitoring seismic activity, gas emissions, and ground deformation. These indicators can provide clues about the buildup of magma beneath the surface.

While we were fortunate to have already left the Blue Lagoon, some of our fellow cruise friends were still there when the eruption began. They were promptly evacuated, demonstrating the preparedness of the local authorities in handling such events.

Our friend, Mark, eager to capture the moment, took a cab to the eruption site that evening and returned with stunning photos and videos. Those are some of the ones captured here. It was a testament to the raw beauty and power of nature.

A very close look by camera!

As we watched the live feed of the eruption during our lava show, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of both excitement and relief. It also made the show more interesting since it was an experience we were in the middle of at the moment.

Evening of eruption

With the eruption, the Blue Lagoon will remain closed for only a few days. I believe given Iceland’s experience with volcanic activity, it is second nature for them to be able to determine these types of delays or closures.

Morning after

The locals are accustomed to these natural events and have developed efficient protocols to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors.

Our first views.

Our close encounter with the Icelandic volcano eruption was a reminder of the unpredictable nature of our planet. It was a truly unforgettable experience that we will cherish for years to come.

May God bless you always!
