Monaco

The Monte Carlo casino!

Our world cruise took an exciting turn today! While the itinerary listed Cannes, France, a quick bus ride whisked us away to the glamorous shores of Monaco instead. With just three hours to explore, we hit the ground running!

This museum was so beautiful on the outside. I’m sure it was even more amazing from the water

First stop: the stunning Oceanographic Museum. Though we didn’t have time to delve into the underwater world, the exterior architecture itself was breathtaking.

These posters were all over this area showing her good sprains. The one on the left is her wedding that my reflection totally got in the way

Reminiscent of a fairytale castle, the museum’s maze-like structure and imposing presence set the tone for a luxurious day.

Princess Grace’ burial place

Monaco boasts a rich and fascinating history. Evidence suggests settlements existed here as far back as the Stone Age! In the 13th century, the Grimaldi family, the current ruling dynasty, seized control of the area, establishing the Principality of Monaco. Strategically located on the French Riviera, Monaco has long enjoyed a close relationship with France, while maintaining its independence. In the late 19th century, the construction of a railroad and the opening of the iconic Monte Carlo Casino transformed Monaco into a world-renowned tourist destination. Today, Monaco is a microstate, the second-smallest country in the world after Vatican City. Despite its size, it’s densely populated, with a unique blend of residents.

Beautiful inside the cathedral
Many of the burial places inside the cathedral were elaborately decorated. I was surprised that Princess Graces’ was not

While French is the official language, Monaco’s population reflects a rich tapestry of cultures. Monegasques, descendants of the original Ligurian inhabitants, make up about 16% of the population. (This is a new one to me, never heard of it, I would have thought they would be called Monacans?!?). French citizens represent the largest group, at roughly 47%. Italians and other nationalities from around the globe also call Monaco home. This cosmopolitan mix adds to the vibrant atmosphere of this tiny principality.

St. Nicholas Cathedral

Monaco’s allure extends beyond its rich history and stunning scenery. The principality’s reputation as a playground for the rich and famous attracts celebrities from all walks of life. You might even brush shoulders with a Formula One driver, like Lewis Hamilton or Jenson Button, who choose to reside here. As a side note, the Monaco Grand Prix is a famous Formula One motor racing event that takes place annually on the Circuit de Monaco.

I wanted to go watch the jumpers but no time

Perhaps you’ll catch a glimpse of a supermodel like Naomi Campbell or a legendary musician like Bono strolling the luxurious streets. Or maybe you’ll spot Hollywood royalty like Leonardo DiCaprio or Beyonce and Jay-Z enjoying a getaway on their yacht docked in the harbor. Unfortunately our luck wasn’t great here, maybe it’ll be better at the casino!

They love statues here. Princess Grace is on the left

Speaking of royalty, this weekend Monaco wasn’t just about glitz and glamour, it was also about equestrian royalty! The famed Longines Global Champions Tour, a world-class show jumping competition, was in town. Imagine witnessing these incredible athletes and their magnificent horses leaping over towering obstacles against the backdrop of the stunning Port Hercule! We watched what we could from afar but it was exciting to know they were here!

Look at those clouds

Next, we wandered towards the Monaco Cathedral.  Steeped in history, this beautiful house of worship served as the wedding venue for the iconic Princess Grace Kelly and is now her final resting place. The intricate details and grandeur of the cathedral were awe-inspiring, both inside and out.

Expensive and unique cars at and around the casino

No visit to Monaco would be complete without witnessing the Changing of the Guard ceremony. The scene was a spectacle – rows of impeccably dressed guards in crisp white uniforms marched to the rhythmic beat of drums, creating a truly unforgettable moment. Finding a good vantage point amidst the crowd was a challenge, but we managed to snag a view that allowed us to appreciate the precision and pomp of the ceremony.

My .10 winnings! 😂
Chuck trying out the slot machine in Monte Carlo

After soaking up the royal atmosphere, our tummies started rumbling. Tucked away in a charming alleyway, we stumbled upon a delightful French bakery.

Opera house

The aroma of freshly baked bread was irresistible, and we indulged in hot paninis oozing with melted mozzarella and savory ham, a very popular sandwich here. To satisfy our sweet tooth, we couldn’t resist indulging in a decadent pana cotta and a scoop of coffee-flavored gelato. Perfect!

Shopping and cafes in this area

Time seemed to fly and soon it was on to the main event: Monte Carlo and its world-famous casino! With doors opening precisely at 2 pm, we arrived just in time to experience the thrill firsthand. Since we are big spenders here, we set a limit of $10 each, embracing the experience more than the potential winnings. Lady Luck wasn’t on our side this time, but the atmosphere was electric! To commemorate the day, I snagged a fun souvenir – a key ring adorned with a casino chip, a perfect reminder of our glamorous Monaco adventure.

Look at the size of those yachts

Even though our time in Monaco was brief, it was a whirlwind of experiences. From the grandeur of the cathedral to the excitement of the casino, this little principality on the French Riviera left a lasting impression. As we boarded the bus back to Cannes, we carried with us a treasure trove of memories that’ll last forever!

Such beautiful and expensive homes

Next city is Nice!

May God bless you always!
