Dubrovnik Croatia

Mark and Janes family joined us today. Dr. Franjo Tudman Bridge

Last year, Dubrovnik left us with a case of the travel blues. The “Pearl of the Adriatic” was undeniably stunning, but relentless rain put a damper on our exploration. So, this year, we vowed to return for a sunshine-filled Dubrovnik adventure, and let me tell you, the sunshine was a total game-changer!

The radio tower

Our adventure began with a stunning drive across the new Dr. Franjo Tudman Bridge. The panoramic view of Dubrovnik’s new town, the majestic Mount Srd, and the idyllic island of Lokrum was simply lovely. It was the perfect introduction to the beauty that awaited us.

The 30m long Ombla River is the shortest river in the world. It comes from a spring underneath the mountain and ends after a waterfall into the sea.

Our first stop was to view the radio tower and Fort Imperial, a towering testament to Dubrovnik’s resilience. The enemy tried to take out the tower but failed. Our amazing guide shared the fort’s role in defending the city from the devastating siege during the 1991 war. His personal story about his parents’ experiences during that time added a powerful layer to the history lesson.

Next to the falls is an old mill destroyed by Serbian bombing in 1991.

This trip, we ventured beyond the famous walls to explore the Ombla River, the shortest, yet most intriguing river in Croatia. Thanks to our guide’s local knowledge, we discovered a hidden spot where the Ombla River spills into the sea, creating a scene of ethereal beauty.

Remains of Napoleons fortress
Our view above Mt. Srd, looking down on the old town.

We then drove up Mount Srd, which rises an impressive 400 meters above sea level. The view from the top was incredible, offering a glimpse of the Napoleonic fortress built to keep an eye on the city.

Old Town is a popular filming location, including Game of Thrones. The St Lawrence Fortress was built to protect the city from the Venetians.

Descending the mountain, we made a stop at the statue of Marin Drzic, the father of Croatian literature. Legend has it that rubbing his nose while making a wish brings good luck, we couldn’t resist giving it a try!

St. Blaise Church
There are over 100 statues of St. Blaise around the old city. Every year during a festival honoring him, his bones are on parade.

Stepping through Pile Gate, the main entrance to the Old Town, felt like entering a time machine. Onofrio’s Fountain, a beautiful 15th-century structure, greeted us. We filled our water bottles and joined the locals in this refreshing tradition. Apparently, even the stray dogs get their water bowls filled here!

Walking the narrow paths

Standing tall in the heart of the Old Town was St. Blaise Church, the city’s patron saint. The intricate details of the Baroque architecture were truly awe-inspiring.

Stradun
Rectors Palace

A short stroll away, we found ourselves amidst a scene straight out of Game of Thrones! The Marin Drzic statue, located in front of the Rector’s Palace, served as a filming location for the popular series. It was fun to stand in the same spot as Daenerys Targaryen! Only a fan will know who that is.

Marin Drzic

While we opted out of walking the iconic walls this time (letting our friends enjoy it for us!), we did spend some time strolling along the polished limestone path outside the walls. The panoramic views of the sparkling Adriatic Sea were unforgettable. Seeing the restored city today is a testament to Dubrovnik’s incredible resilience.

Dubrovnik Cathedral

We then wandered along Stradun, the main pedestrian-only promenade. Lined with cafes, shops, and historical landmarks, it was the perfect place to relax with some gelato and soak up the city’s charming atmosphere. We even picked up some local chocolates with hazelnuts to enjoy back in the cabin.

St. Savior Church
Many steps to climb up to the top of the wall. The wall itself consists of 1080 steps

This sunny Dubrovnik experience was a world away from our rainy trip last year. We packed so much more into this visit and it left us feeling completely satisfied and in love with this remarkable city.

Our next stop is Kotor Montenegro.

May God bless you always.
