Final two days in Nairobi

Our Kenyan adventure is sadly winding down, 9 days full of dreams we never thought would come true, but these last two days in Nairobi have been a whirlwind of experiences I won’t soon forget! We spent more time connecting with our new friends and enjoying the fact we were actually in this beautiful country.

The morning began with a thrilling arrival. Fresh off the plane, we hopped on a jeep for a quick safari adventure in the Nairobi National Reserve. It was surreal to set eyes on these once in a lifetime, amazing animals one last time. From zebras to elephants, buffalo, baboons and impalas just moments after driving into the safari land. This would be a wonderful place to stay and now I totally understand why our friends, Tom and Jessica from worldwidewaftage love Africa so much!

Talk about a culture shock! Security was tight, with a police dog sniffing out any potential threats on the bus, on both trips into Nairobi, a reassuring sight. We had heard that drugs were a big problem here.

This looked like an African square dance
We loved the music.

After a quick sniff from the dogs, and a freshen up at the luxurious Kempinski Hotel, we fueled up for our exploration at the Natbronze Gallery and Restaurant. Not only did I find the most beautiful silver elephant head necklace (a perfect souvenir!), but the entire setting was captivating. The unique sculptures outside, like the elephant skull with intact tusks, were a fascinating glimpse into Kenyan artistry.

It’s not called the Carnivore for nothing.

Back at the hotel, we were treated to a delightful surprise! Our daughter Sandra’s friend, Faith, has a sister, Winnie who lives and works in Nairobi (small world!) who tried patiently to connect with us during our trip there and was finally successful. She dropped by for a visit at the hotel, although we only had time for a cup a coffee and to talk. Her sister, based in Houston where our daughter lives, must have told her about our trip! We had a lovely chat and made some new connections. It solidified our desire to return to Nairobi, and hopefully, this local friend can show us the hidden gems next time!

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we ventured out for a truly unique dining experience at the Carnivore Restaurant. Ostrich, ox balls, crocodile – you name it, they had it! It may not be for the faint of heart, but it was certainly an adventure for the tastebuds. To cap off the evening, we browsed through a local market, where I snagged some hand-painted ceramic eggs with the world and Africa highlighted – a perfect addition to our home’s global theme.

A gift from Winnie. I love it!
Saying goodbye to our native friend!

But the night wasn’t over yet! We were treated to a mesmerizing performance of traditional Kenyan dances and songs by local performers. The vibrant energy and rich cultural experience was amazing and so much worth the time we spent there.

Saying good bye may have been difficult if we weren’t on the same ship for another 100+ days!

As we pack our bags for the journey home, these memories of Nairobi will stay with us forever. From the thrill of the safari to the unexpected connections and the vibrant culture, these last 48 hours have been a perfect send-off to this incredible 9 day adventure. Until next time, Nairobi! We are sad to go but hope we will be able to visit again.

May God bless you always!
