Puerto Limon, Costa Rica

Baby Sloth eating almond leaves

We arrived in Puerto Limon early this morning. We didn’t invest in an excursion since we’ve seen Costa Rico before but will wander around to see what trouble we can get into.

Our standard selfie! 😂

Caribbean steel drums and the unique architecture are just a few things this city is known for. We walked around for a mile or two and couldn’t find either one. I’m guessing they are farther inland than the port.

Cutest decorated seating

Puerto Limon is the seventh largest city in Costa Rica with a population of over 55,000, and is home of the Afro-Costa Rican community. We immediately noticed this white a lot of”Yea Mon” from the locals and the Caribbean dress.

Until 1948, the Costa Rican government did not recognize Afro-Caribbean people as citizens and restricted their movement outside Limón province. As a result of this “travel ban”, this Afro-Caribbean population became firmly established in the region, which influenced decisions not to move even after it was legally permitted. The Afro-Caribbean community speaks Spanish and Limonese-Creole, a creole of English. We heard a lot of Spanish.

Almond trees everywhere

Not to get side tracked but I found it interesting to learn that Creole-English is no official language in any country, but is spoken as mother tongue in 12 countries by a minor part of the population. A total of about 4.6 million people worldwide speak Creole-English as their mother tongue.

So, Christopher Columbus was here too in 1592 while exploring the new World. I’m beginning to think there’s not many places in America that Columbus hasn’t been.

It is home to the Mighty Barca Volcano, standing over 10,000 feet above sea level and the deepest lagoon is 28 feet.

Christmas trees are up!

There are several national parks in the area that surround the volcano.

Fishing boats

Our walking trip was limited but we did see some interesting sights such as the baby sloth climbing around in the tree having breakfast. He moved a lot faster than his mana. The park was also cute and relaxing for the locals to enjoy

Beautiful sunset!

May God Bless you always
