Happy Valentines Day, Yorkey's Knob, Australia

Yorkey’s Knob, Australia

Valentines day according to wikipedia: Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14.

Lots of decorations for Valentines day celebration.

Originating as a Western Christian feast day honoring one or two early saints named Valentinus, Valentine’s Day is recognized as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and romantic love in many regions around the world.

Another beautiful cake from the bakery here on board

I think most of us can agree that its not only romantic love, it love of all kind. It can be your spouse, significant other, brother, sister, mom, dad, children, grandchildren and even best of friends.

Whomever they may be, they are always loved but on valentines day the love is spread loud and clear! They are celebrating valentines day all over the ship today. Red balloons, cakes and flowers everywhere. Today we visited an island called Yorkey’s Knob. It’s about 10 land miles or 17 km. from Cairns, Australia.

Cute little beach

It gets its name from both a natural topographical feature and a British immigrant from Yorkshire, named George Lawson, who lived in the area in the late 1800s. Because of his Yorkshire origins, locals gave Lawson the nickname “Yorkey”. What it’s more famous for is the Great Barrier Reef. We don’t snorkel or dive so we chose not to go see one of the 7th wonders of the world.

Beautiful view from the marina

We could have stayed on a glass bottom boat or see other magnificent areas around the reef but the cost was more than we were willing to pay to not enjoy it to the fullest.

This is what we missed. They say its beautiful! This was a picture pulled off the internet.

The weather was clear and hot. And I do mean hot! The outside temperature was 98F with a heat index of 107. Thats just too much heat. We walked around the area and the small beach and decided to go back to the ship. We had to get to the small island by tender boat.

Racing boats tucked in the corner

The area surrounding the island looks very shallow in some places so we could see why we wouldn’t want to attempt a docking here. The water is absolutely beautiful though and thats what we like to watch. God’s colorful world in action! We leave here this evening and will be out to see for another two days before we arrive in Darwin, Australia.

This sign had an interesting subtitle.

We heard a lot of Alligators are in Darwin. We can even take a cruise out to see a jumping one. Will have to think about that one.

May all of you have a very special Valentines day and may God bless you in all that you do!
