Sick of being Sick!, New Years Eve Dubai

Happy New Year! 2020

Cockatiel guarding the marine life!
The day we disembarked the cruise ship after 30 days began a horrific journey for the two of us. I started out with a cough deep in my chest but appeared to be minor, until it wasn’t. We had 3 days before we left on our flight to Bali with quite a bit planed before we left Dubai.

An underwater tube to walk through and admire the different species of marine life

We decided to visit the Dubai Aquarium and have dinner at Joe’s Crab Shack. Still coughing some but nothing alarming. I chalked it up to the infamous cruise cough that I assumed was minor. How wrong I was! We had plans to be on  a dinner cruise for the New Years Eve celebration and decided to walk to the location to see how far it was.

Some type of Stingray. He had an interesting “face”

We typically do this to get our bearings so that we aren’t out at night with unknown surroundings. Wasn’t looking forward to getting lost, at night, in Dubai. It was about a 30 minute walk to where the Dhow boats were kept and pretty straightforward. We felt comfortable that we would walk instead of taking a taxi especially since it was NYE and traffic is a nightmare under normal conditions.

A suspended bridge we walked over to see more fish.

I really had a hard time breathing and had to sit down a lot on the way back. That night I developed a high fever and chills. I just couldn’t get warm. I took several hot showers to warm up. After a horrible nights sleep, Chuck went to the pharmacy and picked me up some herbal meds for bronchitis. They seemed to have little affect.

Glass Fish

I stayed in bed all day until it was close to time to leave for the dinner cruise. We made it to the marina where the Dhow boats were and this sweet guy, the captain, pulled me up a chair. I was hoping I looked better than I felt. Guess not. This is about 10 pm at night and we were to be leaving to head  towards the Burj Khalifa to watch the show.

These rainbow lobsters were so pretty

We didn’t leave. As a matter of fact, we pulled back and tied back up. Chuck and many other men got up and went to see what was the issue. Apparently, engine problems. I can see all these beautifully decorated boats with lights similar to ours, floating by and I was ready to go. I was actually ready to get it over with. An hour later, we were underway.

Chuck always pulls me to the yellow fish. He know thats my favorite color

Very frustrating.

We traveled through the Dubai creek and experienced some beautiful views of bridges and businesses decorated for the occasion. Even some fireworks along the route. Our dinner was a traditional Arabic dinner. I found hummus with Pita type bread and some chicken.

These turtles were buds!

They were both so hot I couldn’t eat them. Chuck ate my portion. I did eat the bread and some cake. We made it to our destination with a little time to spare. I was shaking and shivering so much that Chuck was sitting next to me with his arms around me trying to warm me up. If I wasn’t sick, the weather (we were outside) was perfect.

This fish was creepy. His mouth is actually open searching for food

When it came time for the fireworks, although we were on the top level of the boat, we couldn’t see anything because everyone congregated to the front of the boat. So, Chuck held on to me and I stood up in the chair to take photos. I took as much as I could and then had to sit down. It was beautiful and so glad that we didn’t miss it.

The Aquarium was very large and you could walk around it several times and see something different.

Especially since this was the main reason for staying in Dubai. Getting ready to head back, the electricity goes out in the boat. It dropped once before but we thought it was because the fireworks were starting and they wanted it dark. Since many people were moving upstairs, we decided to move downstairs. Hopefully it would help me warm up.

This little man was sitting on his perch.

While waiting downstairs as they fixed the electrical issue, this performer was dropped off by another boat. He was pretty impressive with a costume, dance and light show. We saw him on another boat earlier so he must have been the entertainment of the night.

Dinner isn’t bad when you can have it at Joe’s!

The only consolation in regard to the electricity was no blaring music. They got it working just before we arrived. We finally made it back to the dock and walked to our hotel. I was so happy to get off that boat and in bed!

Looking inside the boat dining area. There were two levels.

More fever the next day, New Years Day and we had to pack. I was really concerned about the packing because 1) Chuck would need to do most of it and 2) we had a weight limit and if we exceeded it, and we would, it could cost us a minimum of $150 at the airport. When I upgraded our seats it included 30 kilograms each to use to checked/hold luggage.

Our hats. I used mine to keep warm

The way I read this was that either of us could have as many bags as we needed up to 10 without going over 30 kilos each. We couldn’t make it work with out going over by an excessive amount. We almost went and bought another suitcase to even it out. Chuck finally called Emirates Airlines and found out the 60 kilograms was between both of us.

Glad I didn’t look as bad as I felt.

But, we were still over. How we resolved that was to wear our heaviest clothes, sweatshirts, coats and few layers of other items. We moved a few heavy items to the carry on. After all was said and done, we had 20 kg exactly in two suitcases and 21.5 kg on the 3rd one.

All the different bridges along the canal were decorated in beautiful colors.

We could have bought 5 kg for $75 if bought online but my sweet husband decided to risk it. OK! Done, packed, ready to go in the morning. I’m coughing and miserable all night. Chuck got up in the middle of the night and said he was calling the airlines and postponing our trip.

Fireworks had already started along the route

I talked him into waiting at least another hour and see if I can get my coughing under control. Prayers and pure willpower not to cough helped. I slept sitting up on the sofa all night.

We got a cab to the airport and there are two terminals. One for all Emirates airlines and one for other. Made sense to me but Chuck thought he saw on flight aware that our flight was out of terminal 1, which is NOT Emirates Air.

Hotels were beautifully decorated with colorful lights

The taxi driver didn’t argue with him, although I did and lost, and we got out at Terminal 1. A porter was there to take our money to carry our bags and we find out we should be at the other terminal. Really? I’m too sick to argue now. He charged us 8 Euros, but we had to pay 10 since that was all we had, to move the bags to a bus that would take us to the other terminal.

We saw some drones but not sure where they were headed.

For that I was thankful. We made it to the counter and put our luggage up on the belt to weigh one at a time, slowly adding up the kilograms. Sure enough, we exceeded by 1.5 kilograms. My heart sank. But, the guy gave us a much needed break and let us slide. Bless him!

Our flight was nice. I was still freezing and shaking from the fever. Had all those clothes plus two blankets on me. Chuck said it was cold to him and he was glad he wore the extra heavy clothes. After landing in Bali, we were determined to go to the hospital the next morning.

Another colorful bridge

However, a miracle happened and my fever broke during the night. So, I decided to forego the visit, not knowing that Chuck too was sick with a fever again. Our driver picked us up and we arrived at our beautiful villa 5 hours later after stopping for a really good lunch. The lunch cost us about $16.

We had sent a message to the owners about a doctor or clinic the day before. What we didn’t realize was he is here next door.

Under this bridge was the kings pictures

They are from The Netherlands and comes in every two months for a month long stay to oversee the villas. He dropped by the same day and asked if we need to go to the doctor and we decided to wait a couple of days since we thought we were doing better. On Sunday, his wife dropped by to check on us. These are the nicest people.

The NYE fireworks from the Burj Khalifa. It was magical!

We decided to go. However after our non-english speaking driver arrived at the local hospital we found they are closed on Sundays. I’m assuming this is for non-critical patients. We could have driven the 4 hours to get back to civilization and the more westernized area of Bali but that’s a long drive. We’ll wait one more day.

The owner dropped us off at the international hospital the next morning and picked us up two hours later. He had things to do where we were going so it was perfect timing. The staff and doctors were so nice and did a great job. The cost of the bill for both of us including 3 drugs for Chuck and 4 for me, was $36.

Many cruises taking people to see the show in their display of lights on their boats

That’s unimaginable in the USA. Much of the area is on a cash based system so we stopped for more cash before going but luckily they took our credit card and we didn’t have to use our cash.

It has been a horrible journey from Dubai to Bali and we have to find something to keep from getting so sick on these cruises.

An entertainer on our boat.

This is the second time and it’s getting old. We’re on our last day of the antibiotics (3 days) and feel much better. Now we can sit back and enjoy this hot, humid and beautiful surroundings of Bali, Indonesia.

Thanks for hanging in there with us. I’ll get some good photos of Bali soon!

May God bless you always!
