Last Supermarket trip for Essaouira, No concern for safety here by the Moroccan's

We made our final supermarket trip today in hopes that what we bought will last us until next Wednesday, November 20th when we leave for Marrakech. We always try to calculate just the right amount so that its not necessary to throw food items away. Since we are taking a bus ride to Marrakech, we’ll take the remaining items we can with us such as shampoo, body wash, napkins, toilet paper, sugar and anything that doesn’t require refrigeration. All of those will not go on the plane with us when we leave Marrakech to Rome. Hopefully we wont need to buy anything further in those necessities over the next two weeks.

These trees are interesting in how the leaves or branches grow up the side of the trunk

We typically walk to the supermarket and take a taxi back to the apartment. It’s about 2.5 kilometers/1.5 miles to walk. We just aren’t interested in carrying that many grocery bags when walking back. The taxis are readily available most of the time. They cant be called. They just show up! We were impatient this time when one didn’t show up for some time so we walked out to the street and waited. After a few minutes a blue taxi pulled up and we hopped in. Chuck tried to shut the back door next to him and it wouldn’t close or lock. He had to hold the handle so the door wouldn’t fly open! And guess what?

We do miss our 50 inch TV but I’ll take Chuck’s 15 inch laptop over nothing any day!

No seat belts either! Thank goodness the trip was just a short ride back. We think about the safety measures here in comparison to other countries and back home. It’s so different and shocking at first but now, we have become accustomed to it.

Other “safety” type items we noticed are buildings being worked on are being held up or supported by wooden posts propped up against concrete blocks; water must be boiled before drinking or we buy bottled water. We boil it. Much simpler and easier;

Sidewalks have deep holes that one could easily fall in and become seriously hurt if not paying attention; Crossing the street isn’t as safe as it is in the other countries we have been to so far. Here, you have to time it just right. The cars/horse carts/motorcycles do not stop. And, they honk at you if walk out in front of them, even if you are at a crosswalk! We have also noticed there are hardly any police around. During our walk home after the Dromedaire ride last week I mentioned all the police presence in my post.

Apparently the president of Morocco was in town and the hotel next to our apartment and all down the main street was covered in policemen standing around. They are called the national police here in Morocco and after talking to some locals that spoke some English, we found out he was in town for a festival at the Medina.

After our grocery trip, we had to load up our Internet cards once again. This has been by far the most frustrating of our travels, well, except for the luggage costs. The merchants are only allowed so much data to sell.

Cute car.

When they are out of the amount they are allotted, they are “finished” as we are often told when we go later in the day to get our phones refilled. We filled both phones today at 10 GB each but we needed 20. We stopped at the Maroc telecom store and the wait time was ridiculous so we decided to walk around to find another merchant and we were successfully able to get another 20 GB. We’ll use this to download Netflix shows to watch over the next week. When we rent any apartment we make sure there are Internet and wireless capabilities. So far, until we arrived here, that has been free and part of the package.

Notice how the walls are being held up while workers inside are pounding away!

We are hoping when we move to Marrakech next week that the Internet is included. We have another option we are looking into that will allow us to never have to change the sim cards again. Once we get that ironed out, I’ll fill you in.

Had a wonderful talk with my son last night and he had to tell me how they process their meat over here. Lets just say I didn’t need to hear that! We are planning to eat at one of the local restaurants this weekend, I’ll probably eat fish.

Having another one of those great massages tomorrow since its such a great price! Just filling our days. We do try to get outside for at least an hour each day. The bad part is that it’s so windy and the sand is so bad, we always need a shower after our walks. At least we are clean! 😁

May God bless you always!
