Fishing Port, Canary Island Budget

In light of Halloween I took this is in black and white. It made the seagulls look like bats!

The weather here has been so nice and warm but the wind is crazy! We gave up hope on our hair so we just wear a cap every day.

My model for the day!

When out in the sun, it can be pretty brutal so the cap keeps the sun at bay. After our daily walk, we are more than ready for a shower. It’s like being in a desert here.

These blue fishing boats appear to be a very popular sighting in Essaouria. Although everything is painted blue to include taxi cabs and horse buggies!

The sand really blows and thank goodness we have glasses on or it would be in our eyes all the time. You learn not to talk too much so you don’t get a mouthful of dirt!

That doesn’t stop us from walking around and exploring the area. We are much more comfortable with the area now than we were about 10 days ago.

The fishermen were working on the nets preparing them for the days catch.

We have found the people here very friendly and helpful. There are some language barriers but more likely than not you can find someone that speaks english.

The Moroccan boys jumping off the edge into the water. No fear!

We wandered over to the fishing port and spent some time watching the massive waves crash against the rocks and I used a little kitty as my model while taking photos.

The waves were amazing!

Someone gave him a small fish and he loves attention so much he left it alone and a seagull took it from him. He’ll get another one!

As we walked around the back of the port, there are an abundance of blue fishing boats.

Bargaining for the days catch of Eel and some other fish. Sardines and shrimp were popular catches. Some have a grill and will cook the sardines for you. (No Thank you!)

These are part of the most photographed areas in Essaouira. We sat for awhile watching some local moroccan boys jumping off the side into the water. One just couldn’t get his nerve up. He would run and stop right at the edge.

Fisherman carrying some of their catch to be sold.

We had a good laugh with him. There were plenty of fishermen bringing in their catch and although the fish smell isn’t bad, it was the rancid standing water smell that got to me.

Larger fishing boats. Bad picture, too hazy today with the bright sun.

I had to leave so we didn’t see much of the catch along the way.

We walked to the end of the massive concrete pier to see the large boats up on dry dock and did some more people watching.

Even larger boats for offshore fishing.

I finally finished the calculations for the budget for Canary Islands. I just forgot to post it. We did very well, only went over by $188 USD. Compared to last month, thats amazing. Unexpected expenditures were my power supply for my mac computer that went bad and had the broken glass fixed on my iPad that was broken during transit months ago, together costing $250. All part of everyday life! Our expected budget for Morocco is looking really good. Other than food, its pretty inexpensive to stay here.

Canary Islands Final Budget

We booked a sunset camel ride for Saturday. This group has very good reviews and we are looking forward to it. They will use our cell phones to take photos of us and from the reviews and photos, he does an amazing job.

Older wooden mast sailboat

His name is Mostafa. After paying for the excursion, I chatted with him on Whatsapp, a texting application highly used in Europe.

He now thinks we are great friends and stated “we have to WhatsApp everyday” and “we will be friends”.  Not sure what I have gotten myself into here.

All the kite surfers in the background! I counted over 40. We were amazed they didn’t run into each other.

I fussed at him for texting and driving so he tells me he is not driving when he texts me now. Its funny! We will wear moroccan clothes to include a scarf and djellaba due to the high wind and dust in the desert.

Another pretty beach.

The sand will be too much without it. So excited for this adventure!

Enjoy your Halloween and may God bless you always!
