La Roque Beach, Happy Hens and Hard Rock cafe

Long walks make healthier bodies, right? I sure hope so because I’m wearing my tennis shoes out! Today we are sitting inside for the day. Its a little cooler but it’s the rain that’s keeping us in. We’ll do laundry today, although there’s one, possible two very small loads to do. We actually have a tumble dryer in this location. AWESOME! Due to the thick brick walls, the type of dryer installed is a condenser tumble dryer. There is a container that collects the water from the clothes as it dries. The definition I found when trying to determine the difference in the ones we use in the United States is this:
Europe: The condenser tumble dryer removes humidity by using two separate air flows. Air re-circulates inside the machine and is heated. … This causes the moisture in the air to condense into water which is then pumped to the water tank or out through the hose..
USA: An electric or gas powered heater that heats the air that is drawn through the clothes as they tumble, which in turn heats up the clothes and the water in them.

Interesting experience. It dried the clothes. Thats all that mattered to me!

The grocery isles in the market. Really good healthy food choices

Yesterday we walked a different route to one of the beaches called La Roque. We stopped at a small grocery market called Holme Grown.

Relaxing area to read and have coffee at the market

It had a little country store with a large assortment of fresh vegetables, fruit, many other groceries, a bakery, butcher shop, flower stand, a cafe and even an area to read books while drinking coffee.

A little low on pastries today

It is a small one stop shopping for many of our needs. Everyone was very friendly and helpful and its only about a mile or less from here.

A cafe and you cant see it but an enclosed play area for the kids

We also passed the happy hens farm. There were lot’s of chickens! You could buy fresh eggs on the side of the road. There weren’t any available but it was a small covered wooden box with a place for the eggs and an honor box to place your money.

Happy hens! A lot of them!!

However, it did have a sign that said “smile you are being recorded”. Just in case…..

Lavoir- historic wash basin

Our next stop before reaching the beach was a historic Lavoir. A Lavoir is a public place set aside for the washing of clothes. Communal washing places were common in Europe until industrial washing was introduced, and they in turn were replaced by launderettes.

Larger view of the Lavoir. It has two water pumping handles

We arrived at La Roque beach and of course the tide was out so it was miles of rock and boats sitting on rocks or sand. We walked to the end and took the video above. The best time to visit is when the tide is in. We have a book on tide tables, we’ll pay more attention to that when we walk that way again. We are up to 4 miles a day, sometimes by accident. Chuck likes to take wrong turns and assures me we are going in the right direction so we end up walking further so that we can get back. I think he does it on purpose!

They have their own “Hard Rocque Cafe” 😀

Cute little eatery with coffee, Ice cream and sandwiches

Hopefully the weather will clear up and warm up tomorrow so we can go to one of our areas of interest we have planned. It is expected to rain off and on all day and tonight. Not complaining, our weather here has been magnificent!

May God bless you always!
