| Channel Markers or Beacons at the end of the pier separate Deauville and Trouville on the Touques river |
Next to Deauville, actually just across the water which we estimate to be about a football field in length, is another community known as Trouville-sur-Mer.
| Hotel de Ville is actually the town hall. In French its called “Mairie” |
| The tide was “way” out today. Normally the water is up to the rocks. |
The population is about the same as Deauville at around 4500. There wasn’t much information while walking around the small community so I did a little research online.
| Looking from the Deauville side, the boats should be in water. The tide is so low they cannot leave. We see many fisherman leave very late at night around 9-10 pm. This must be when the water is high enough to get their boat out. |
| The Normandy flag and coat of arms. Two lions for lower and upper Normandy |
Most of the information points to a painter, Charles Mozin, who made Trouville well known through his paintings by selling them in Paris. This enticed the Parisians, who had lots of money to spend, to visit this beautiful, colorful little commune.
| Entrance to the fish market |
They began spending their holidays (vacations) here and this pushed the demand for more exquisite items such as housing, hotels, restaurants and shopping.
| Amazing catch! Lobster, steamed, 45 euros for two, whole. Not bad! |
One of Mozin’s paintings was the village of fisherman. The fisherman make their catch and sell the fresh fish, shrimp, crab, mussels, etc in this village or market.
| More fish vendors |
This market is still popular today and some of the crustaceans such as shrimp were steamed so you could take them home for dinner that night. What I liked was that we could shop without gagging on the fish and raw seafood smell as we did during our trip in Fiji, 2 years ago.
| We will ride the Ferris wheel before we leave France! |
Around the same time frame that Trouville was discovered, a new fad (called fashions back then) cropped up for health spas.
| Another exquisite hotel. I just love their architectural designs |
This was in the late 1800s. A growing middle class, benefiting from the profits of new mass production, had money to spend and time to spend it. It was easy to convince them that a holiday by the sea would be good for their health and add to their pleasures of shopping and eating!
| Many churches have these clocks on them. Shouldn’t be late for services! |
Sea water baths were recommended as the perfect rejuvenating tonic for the old and a cure for a multitude of ills such as rabies, anemia, depression, asthma… If only this were true. Maybe Joe Biden’s cure for cancer “if he is elected” are the salt baths?
| The Grand Casino! Is prettier from the Deauville side. |
We truly enjoyed our walk and found quite a bit to see including the Casino. We couldn’t go past a certain point inside without putting down a bet so we just walked around the entrance way.
| Beautiful arrangements wen you walk inside the casino |
It smelled so good. Like roses and flowers of all kinds. The aroma could draw you in alone.
| The stairs walking up to the inside of the casino. Slot machines are in various places around the first floor. A very nice restaurant is just inside as well. |
Today, at the moment, it is pouring down rain but if the weather lets up this afternoon, we will walk to a horse jumping competition. It is the Pole International du Cheval Longines Deauville.
| The Ferris Wheel buckets. I hope there are seat belts! |
I heard from a friend, Anne Weir back in Richmond, that they have this type of competition in Miami as well.
| The Trouville beach looking over to the Casino from the walkway to the channel markers |
Once we are settled back down in Florida, I’ll see if we can locate that one and do some comparisons.

Horse racing is also a big deal here. We may venture out to see one of those and hopefully not lose our shirt in the process. Well, if we do, that would give us more room in the luggage!
| More clocks along the boardwalk |
May God bless you all!
